Post-Treatment Instructions

Congratulations on investing in yourself and your new smile! Please see below for information and downloadable documents regarding Lux Dental’s post-treatment instructions.

  • Congratulations on investing on yourself and your new smile! We could not be happier you chose LUX for your smile makeover.

    • Your temporary veneers are made of a plastic material. Please be very careful when biting into food. It is best to cut food up and avoid biting into anything hard and crunchy. Your permanent veneers are incredibly strong but you will need to be cautious with your temporaries.

    • You may experience temperature sensitivity with your temporaries. That is normal and expected and will likely improve with time.

    • It is possible that you may get a bluish tinge of color at the gum line. This is normal and we will thoroughly clean your teeth before cementing your permanent veneers.

    • Caring for your temporary veneers is incredibly important to a successful cementation appointment. Although it may be time consuming, the following are the care instructions for your temporaries.

    • Brush 3-5 times per day, paying special attention to the gum line. Use a soft toothbrush and your regular toothpaste.

    • Floss at least twice per day using floss threaders as demonstrated at your appointment. The temporary veneers are all connected and you must floss under them to keep the gums healthy.

    • Use hydrogen peroxide in the provided syringes 5 times per day, scrubbing the peroxide around the temporaries and gum tissue. Spit out the excess. Do this for approximately 3 weeks.

    • One week prior to your cement appointment, discontinue use of the hydrogen peroxide and switch to Peridex using the same process. Syringe and scrub the Peridex around the temporaries and gums 5 times per day and spit out the excess.

    • The temporary veneers are all connected for strength. Your permanent veneers will be separate like your natural teeth.

    • Take Tylenol or Ibuprofen as needed for discomfort.

If you have any concerns, please contact Dr. Tack on her cell at 414.687.0719 (texts are also welcome) or email at drtack@luxdentalwi.com.

    • Wear your trays 22 hours per day, taking them out to eat. You may drink clear liquids but anything dark such as coffee or tea will stain the trays.

    • After you eat, brush and floss your teeth if possible. If that isn’t possible, please rinse your mouth with water before reinserting your trays.

    • Use your Munchie every time you insert your trays, chewing for approximately 20 seconds per tooth, both upper and lower arch. You may also use your Munchie at any other time during the day to help stimulate tooth movement. Aim for around ten minutes per day.

    • Download the My Invisalign app and use your virtual care kit to track your progress. Take new pictures every time you switch your trays if desired. You may message Dr. Tack on the app but there is not a chat feature so if you have any questions please call, text or email her.

    • To care for your trays, use the Invisalign Cleaning Crystals several times per week. In the morning when you wake up, remove your trays, brush your teeth and brush and rinse your trays as well. Do not use any harsh chemicals such as bleach or abrasives. If the trays become stained, you may contact Dr. Tack for a new one or depending how many days you have left, switch to the next tray (if you have questions please contact her).

    • Monitor the tracking of your trays by ensuring a tight fit between the tooth and tray as shown to you on the delivery appointment. If you notice that tooth is not fitting tightly to the tray, increase the use of your Munchie. If you still notice it after two days, please contact Dr. Tack as you may need a new scan and new aligners made.

    • If you lose a tray, we can order you a new one. It is best to keep your previous tray so that you will have something to wear in the event you lose one. Please call Dr. Tack or the office to discuss the next steps for that.

    • If you lose an attachment, don’t panic! Please call Dr. Tack or the office to come in for a replacement.

    • Keep your aligners away from pets and when not in use, store them in the case.

    • It is normal to have some soreness and discomfort the first few days of each tray. If needed, take Tylenol to minimize discomfort. Do not take Ibuprofen.

If you have any concerns, please contact Dr. Tack on her cell at 414.687.0719 (texts are also welcome) or email at drtack@luxdentalwi.com.

    • Most new dentures require an adjustment period. This period will require the patient and the dentist to work together for the best result for you and your dentures.

    • Start slowly with a new denture. Eat easier softer foods first before attempting to chew more challenging foods.

    • Practice speaking with your new teeth. Whether this is your first set or you have had dentures before, there will be differences that will require you to learn to eat and speak all over again.

    • Dentures will not fit as well as they can initially. It generally takes several days for a new set of dentures to settle into the tissue of the mouth.

    • After several days of trial wear with a new set, you will generally be instructed to return to your dentist for a check. Adjustments can then be made based on your experiences. Any soreness of the gums, looseness, difficulties with chewing, or difficulties in speech can be evaluated. You dentist can than make necessary adjustments or give you suggestions for dealing with any concerns that you have.

    • The most important way of caring for your dentures is to brush them at least once a day – inside and out. You can use a soft toothbrush or special denture brush. Either regular toothpaste or denture cleaning cream will work well. Occasional soaking in a denture cleansing solution can also be helpful but is not required. Generally, soaking on a weekly basis followed by a thorough brushing will be adequate.

    • Take care not to drop your dentures when cleaning them. It is helpful to clean your dentures over a washcloth or over a sink full of water to prevent breaking the denture if dropped.

    • Dentures require regular professional care. We suggest that all denture patients have their dentures and gum tissue checked on a yearly basis. This assures that any problems are identified and corrected before damage is done to the mouth. Adjustments and relines can be made to dentures that will keep them working well and fitting well longer than if no preventive care is taken.

    • Most often, it is best to sleep with dentures out of the mouth. This gives the tissues of the mouth a rest too. In some instances, a patient’s jaws or muscles need the support of dentures at sleep. These patients will feel better sleeping with their dentures in place.

    • Crowns/Bridges usually are a two step process, the first being the preparation appointment and the second being the cementation appointment. However, additional appointments may be needed if the fit of the restoration is not to Dr. Tack’s liking. If that were to happen, a new scan of your tooth will be taken and the crown/bridge sent back to the lab at no charge to you.

    • After the preparation appointment, your lip or tongue may be numb. Please have caution chewing or drinking as you may damage the soft tissues in that area. You may eat immediately after the appointment but we encourage you to wait until the numbness has worn off.

    • Brush your temporary crown/bridge as you brush your other teeth. You may use an electric toothbrush. Floss the temporary crown as demonstrated at your appointment.

    • Temporary crowns/bridges are cemented with a temporary cement. In rare instances, they may fall off. If that happens, you can place the temporary back on with a small amount of Vaseline or toothpaste to help create a suction. You may also call Lux Dental for us to recement it for you.

    • Some pain/discomfort is normal after the preparation of a crown/bridge. Hot and cold sensitivity is common as is discomfort to chewing. That should go away after several days. If not, there is a possibility of a root canal if the tooth continues to be painful. The gum tissue around the area may also be sore. You may rinse with warm salt water rinses or diluted hydrogen peroxide.

    • Avoid chewing hard or sticky foods on the temporary. It is plastic and may break if you chew too hard on it. Your permanent restoration is very strong and can be chewed on once cemented.

    • If your bite feels off in your temporary, please feel free to call for an adjustment.

If you have any concerns, please contact Dr. Tack on her cell at 414.687.0719 (texts are also welcome) or email at drtack@luxdentalwi.com.

  • Please read and follow these instructions as closely as possible.

For the remainder of the day:

    • Do not rinse your mouth

    • Do not vigorously spit

    • Do not drink from a straw

    • Do not smoke

    For Bleeding:

    • Bite down on gauze with firm pressure for 30-45 minutes. You may try this several times, changing out the gauze if it becomes soaked. A small amount of bleeding is normal after an extraction and a little blood in saliva can appear alarming. If the site is still oozing, wet a tea bag and bite with firm pressure, the tannins in the tea will help stop bleeding.

    • At nighttime for the first few nights, place a towel over your pillow in case of any oozing

    For Swelling:

    • Use an ice pack 20 minutes on and 20 minutes on if you would like. Swelling is common after an extraction and regular icing may help decrease this side effect. Use cold packs for 48 hours and then switch to heat if you would like.

    • Sleep with your head slightly elevated for 48-72 hours

    Eating:

    • Eat soft foods for several days until you feel up to adding more into your diet

    • Avoid hard and crunchy foods as well as any nuts or shelled foods near the extraction site until healing is complete.

    Oral Hygiene:

    • You may return to brushing, avoiding the extraction site, after today using a soft toothbrush. Again avoid any vigorous spitting.

    • After 48 hours you may do warm salt water rinses, gently swirling the salt water in your mouth and allowing the water to drip out, do not vigorously spit

    • Avoid alcohol based mouthwash during the healing process

    Medication

    • Take over the counter pain meds as directed if necessary

    • If Dr. Tack has prescribed further medication, take as directed until gone.

    Pain:

    • Pain is normal after an extraction. If you notice an increase of pain after 3 days, you may have developed a dry socket. Please call our office for further instructions and treatment.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns about your extraction and healing, please never hesitate to call our office at 262.205.7115 or Dr. Tack at 414.687.0719 if it is after hours. If you are experiencing uncontrolled bleeding either call our office or if we are unavailable, call your physician or go to the emergency room

  • Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease. The purpose of the treatment is to remove bacterial plaque and tartar from around teeth and under the gum line, which is causing bone loss. The goal is to produce clean, healthy teeth and roots, which will promote healing of the inflammation and infection that causes gum disease.

    • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever for any tenderness or discomfort. Take ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) unless you have medical conditions or allergies.

    • Avoid eating anything on the area being treated for two hours or until the anesthetic has worn off completely. It is easy to bite or burn your cheek, tongue or lip while numb. Avoid any hard foods such as tortilla chips, potato chips, popcorn, or seeds for the next several days.

    • To help soothe the area, rinse your mouth 2-3 times a day with warm salt water rinses. If you are prescribed Peridex/Chlorhexidine, use as directed.

    • Resume your home care regimen of brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and daily flossing immediately, but be gentle with the area recently treated. Your gum health must be maintained with proper home care, as instructed, and regular dental visits. You may use a WaterPik if recommended.

    • The teeth may be more sensitive to hot or cold temperatures, and/or sweets. This is normal. This occurs as the gum tissue heals and shrinks in size and should gradually resolve in a few weeks with proper home care. Consistently brushing two to three times daily with sensitivity toothpaste or using fluoride rinses may alleviate this over time. Avoid toothpastes with “whitening” or baking soda, as this will contribute to the problem. If sensitivity continues or is severe, professional application of a desensitizing agent may be required.

    • Refrain from smoking for 24 to 48 hours after scaling and root planning as tobacco will delay healing of the tissues. Smoking cessation is highly recommended. You can expect to notice less redness, less bleeding, and less swelling of your gum tissues. Your teeth may feel smoother and your mouth will taste and feel better. We will look forward to seeing you for your regular periodontal maintenance to keep up with what we just accomplished together.
